Description
Vitamin A is a (water-insoluble) vitamin for birds that do not (or insufficiently) produce vitamin A themselves, such as parakeets, parrots, cockatoos and canaries (white recessive). In nature, curved bills often eat vitamin A rich foods. Seeds for crooked beaks usually contain too little vitamin A, which means that addition to the diet is necessary. Recessive white canaries cannot convert vitamin A from provitamin A, so adding it to the diet is necessary. Signs that indicate vitamin A deficiency: -Canaries (especially recessive white canaries): - poor breeding results. - Parakeets, parrots and cockatoos: - stuffy nose and swollen upper eyelids often accompanied by lacrimation, in severe cases adhesion of the eyelids - swellings between and behind the lower jaw branches (indicating swollen salivary glands) - damage to the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat and respiratory tract.
